SKYKOMISH VALLEY · WASHINGTON
Come closer to the wild.
Follow the Skykomish River into a mountain valley shaped by forest, granite peaks, historic railroad towns, and year-round adventure—close enough for a weekend, far enough to feel gone.
WHY THE SKYKOMISH VALLEY
A mountain escape that still feels undiscovered.
Close Enough to Return Often

Trade city streets for river bends, evergreen forests, and mountain views without losing an entire day to travel. The Skykomish Valley makes a genuine escape possible, even when you only have a weekend.
Wild in Every Direction

Hike to alpine lakes, follow forest trails to waterfalls and lookouts, explore the river, or simply slow down beneath towering evergreens. Adventure begins long before you reach the end of the highway.
Different in Every Season

Snowy winter weekends give way to rushing spring waterfalls, high-country summer trails, and quiet autumn color. Each season brings a different reason to return.
THE CHARACTER OF THE REGION
A valley shaped by river, rail, and mountains.
The Skykomish Valley has never been polished into a conventional resort destination. The river still guides the road, small mountain towns retain their history and individuality, and the surrounding peaks remain the dominant presence.
The appeal lies in that authenticity: fewer crowds, fewer distractions, and more room to experience the Cascades on their own terms.

The River Leads the Way
The Skykomish River winds through the center of the valley, connecting forested communities, mountain views, swimming holes, and quiet places to pause beside the water.
Mountain Towns With a Story
Index, Baring, and Skykomish each carry traces of the valley’s railroad and timber history. They feel lived-in rather than staged—small communities surrounded by landscapes much larger than themselves.
Unpolished by Design
There is no sprawling resort center or packed itinerary waiting for you. Days here are shaped by the weather, the trail, the river, and how slowly you decide to move.
SIGNATURE EXPERIENCES
The valley is the itinerary.
Plan the weekend around one unforgettable trail, follow the river without a schedule, or experience the Cascades one waterfall, mountain town, and scenic turn at a time.

Follow the Skykomish River
The river runs through the heart of the valley, creating swimming holes, rocky beaches, forested bends, and quiet places to sit beside the current. Some of the best moments here require little more than finding your way to the water.

Hike to Alpine Water
Alpine lakes, granite basins, and unforgettable high-country views.

Chase Waterfalls Through the Forest
Follow forest trails and rocky river corridors to rushing cascades, misty viewpoints, and pools carved into the granite. Some falls require a hike; others appear just beyond Highway 2.

Walk Through Railroad History
Follow sections of the former Great Northern Railway route along the Iron Goat Trail, where old tunnels, snow sheds, bridges, and railway remnants tell the story of crossing the Cascades before modern Highway 2.
Spend a Day on the River
From scenic stretches to more adventurous runs, rafting is one of the best ways to experience the Skykomish in summer and see the valley from a different perspective.

Make a Day of Leavenworth
Follow Highway 2 east for a scenic drive to Leavenworth, where mountain views, shops, restaurants, tasting rooms, and seasonal events make for an easy half-day or full-day adventure before returning to the quiet of the valley.

Make for Stevens Pass
Ski and snowboard through winter, then return in summer for hiking, mountain biking, scenic chairlift rides, and Cascade views from the crest. Stevens Pass gives the eastern end of the valley a different energy in every season.
Trail, river, road, and resort conditions can change quickly in the Cascades. Check current conditions before heading out.
